Post subject:  S3 sprockets and chain

Needing rear sprocket and figured I should swap over chain and front sprocket as well. Wanting to go more with acceleration over top speed with the sprocket choice. Any suggestion on number of teeth and a supplier? What size chain?

Thanks!

Pretty hard to beat the 14/41 stock setup. A 520 chain would be an upgrade.

I replaced the chain and sprockets on my S3 last year and had the same questions. I did't get exactly what I wanted but I am happy with what I got.

In June of last year I purchased sprockets from PBISprockets.com (14/41) for $88.35. I also bought a Regina Chain ORS2BX 530 X 110 links for $110. That is an O-ring sealed chain. It came with both rivet and clip style master links.

At that time I could not find a 520 sprocket for the front that was conveniently available. I think it would be worth your while to get the 520 set if you want better acceleration. You may have to modify a sprocket to fit or get a custom front sprocket. I am pleased with the 14/41 ratio. I would not want to give up any of the top end on this bike.

Let us know what you decide to go with.

As to 520 front....RZ (and a bunch of other Yamaha sprockets) use the same spline pattern as Kaw triples. I used to have a cross-reference chart, but can't find it now?
Usually around $10.00 and all over ebay.

It is good to see guys using the 520 option for triple sprockets at PBI. I'm sure doing so helps insure PBI continue offering the option in the future. ;) BTW, when searching for a specific tooth count for the S bikes be sure to check all the S bike varients at PBI's site. The sprocket size you want may be close enough to a std size on an alternate S bike and you will avoid the "custom" up charge...

I had a 13t one time for my S3 but found it too low geared for hi speed operation with a stock rear. I forget where I got the thing, it was over 20 years ago when I bought it. The 14 is about right. I use a 15 today.

Cool, I'm looking at the 520 setup. Anything else needed aside from the front and rear sprockets and chain?

Had seen using yamaha front sprocket required fabbing a spacer... unnecessary for PBI?

Savant - When I bought my sprockets from PBI in June 2012 they DID NOT have a 520 front sprocket for the S3. They only listed the 530 front sprocket. (I just checked the PBI website online store and they still do not offer a 520 sprocket for the S3).

Scramble73 posted that a Yamaha sprocket will also work. Some investigation is required to find out which ones work. Other posters suggested that a spacer will be required. These questions and my haste led me to purchase 530 sprockets and chain.
