While struggling with a carb problem on my S3 I finally checked the battery voltage and discovered a problem. The battery charges up OK and holds a full charge but after some testing I discovered that my Rectifier is failed. The Voltage Regulator looks to be good.

What is the best way to go? Do I find a good, original style S3 Rectifier for this bike? Do any of you recommend adapting a later model Voltage Regulator/Rectifier from another bike?

Does anyone have a Rectifier PN 21061-029 for sale? I have seen several on eBay with the 21061-XXX number. I suspect that the only differences are wire color and connector style. Are there acceptable PNs that I can substitute for the S3?

There is a combined regulator/rectifier available new from Simon in the UK. This sounds like an excellent way to stop worrying about those other ancient parts.

Ian, this is exactly what I was thinking. Has anyone done this mod on any triple?

I have an idea - How about if I go first and let you know how it turns out?

I am working on it. :!:

any modern 3 wire rect/reg combo will work. I think i have one off a CBR on mine.
basically, any bike with a permanent magnet and 3 wire stator.

The rectifier/regulator Ian referred to is for KH NOT S3. It will not work on S3.
The difference is two wire vs three wire.... the S3 is three wire.

That looks better!
The products Simon offers are quality and reliable... so is he.
That said, as noted earlier, any three wire reg/rect should work.

I have upgraded my Voltage Rectifier and Voltage Regulator to a newer solid state VRR. The one that I bought is a replacement for the VRR used on some Yamahas - PN 4jh-81960-00-00 and equivalent (used on YZF 600, R6, R1, etc). I bought it from RMSTATOR on eBay for $59 and free shipping.

This is what came in the box:
Image

The connector and terminals was unexpected. I had ordered them from another source that I have dealt with in the past. Now I have extras.

I suspect the S3 is very similar to the other triples in parts layout but this is what I started out with. Stock S3 equipment placement as shown.
Image

I removed the Rectifier and the regulator. My plan was to try to mount the new VRR on the back of the battery box where the original Regulator was mounted. In the picture below I have the Original Rectifier laying on top of the new VRR to compare bolt hole spacing. Looks good!
Image

I wired up the connector with some 10 ga wires for ground and lead wires. Then I bolted the new VRR into place. I plugged it all in and secured the wires. Here is a side view of the installation. It looks like a Factory job. :D
Image

The stray brown wire in the foreground is the main supply for all lighting. It used to be fed from the regulator output. It also gets connected to Battery when the ignition switch is turned on. I turned the key and all electrical is operational. I will tape off that brown wire and leave it there. Nothing on the original wiring was cut to do this upgrade except to cut off the old terminals from the three leads coming from the stator.

I haven't run the bike yet because I want to pull the air cleaner and synch the carbs again after fiddling with the throttle cable.

Maybe you guys have seen this before but I wanted to share it with you.
