I'm going to take a shot at an explaination, but keep in mind, I have never riden a snowmobile so I could very well be wrong.
I believe most snowmobiles have an automatic clutch with a CVT type arrangement. So, wouldn't it be designed to perform best at one particular rpm band (say, 8500 - 8800 rpm)? Therefore, the pipes might be constructed for just that narrow band and suck anywhere else?. I am sure some of you from the frosty north can educate the rest of us southerners.
