I'm not sure what you mean, Z.

that would be "very rare" jim

Thanks. I was thinking pistons rocking in the bore, horse poop... overthinking.

RB, "early cylinders are not portable to later specs" makes sense as adding material to the cast iron liner would be a bit difficult, but can series 2 cylinders be modified to 1st series specs? Has anybody actually tried this? A quick look suggests that it can be done, but I'll have to make accurate measurements to see if the transfer cutaway can actually be modded without causing problems.

I mod the cut-outs all the time, not a big deal.

REALLY ? . . . Just cutting the liners REALLY won't do the trick

I'll let this post run a while and let the experts tell me why it can't be done

Actually, I am in jet-lagged "snitty" mode - as I am not an engineer, please tell me how a liner that is a totally different PLACE in the alloy casting to all other models can be ported to the same spec as the earlier models :eh: some ports need lowering and others need raising (as far as I remember . . the again Alsheimers DOES run the the family ;) ) So you either cut iron or weld alloy  And it REALLY isn't worth that effort, I have done the Dyno rolling road tests and the final output is the same . . . It's just the WAY that the power is delivered that makes the difference - - - add a few more BHP with a good port job and you will be just as well off

I was just talking about the transfer cut aways. The later "short" cut outs are easily modded to earlier cut out spec. It is actually not super important, as it's really the piston that controls the transfer flow.

Well, I hope you find some cylinders - but you have provided lively debate, always good on a forum like this!

JA, I think RB is referring to modifying the H2-B/C cylinders to the early specs, while I was referring to the later H2/-A cylinders. For the latter, only the transfer cutaway has to be modified (as far as I know) to obtain the early specs, but for the H2-B/C cylinders the intake and exhaust ports are somewhat different (though timing isn't) and these have to be modified as well. The changes to B/C cylinders were to cut down mechanical noise.

Exactly! Hooktool says he has two 2nd generation cylinders (late H2 and H2A) and a first generation cylinder. I would think it would be easier to modify the transfer cutaways than to properly pack cylinders for shipping.

I could easily cut away the transfer, but I thought there is a difference in the ports as well. No? The drawing is not clear to me on this. I'll bring them into the shop and measure them, I guess.
