Thanks for your replies!

Are the barnett springs different thickness, free standing height, or color than the original kawasaki springs?

I have an extra set of clutch plates (used, and in rough shape) that I think are aftermarket from sometime in the late 70's/early 90's.
They have square contact patches vs grooved ones that I have now.. not sure what they are, besides cracked. I also have a mystery set that seem to have an aluminum core?

My springs I believe are Kawasaki.. measure 31.50 - 31.75 free height

Do those have grey friction material? If so, they sound like my old Barnetts.

The cost isn't massive, and it would be good to just get a new clutch pack and not have any worries. Stock springs are marginal, especially after 40 years. (if stock) There are Z1 springs that guys like, I personally have used 3 barnett springs and 2 stockers for decades.

Sounds like they're Barnetts' then, Jim.
They were taped together with yellowed masking tape labled "S**T" HA!

That's what made me wonder about the springs. They are a natural color, and don't seem to be any kind of special.
I do however have to eat my wheaties to operate the clutch with these springs. New cable with by-the-book adjustments helped only marginally. 6-spline actuator with un-cracked nylon race helped slightly also. I'd like to get a pull scale and confirm that the clutch feels around 35-40lbs pull.

Thanks for the lead.. I'll have to look into these!

I guess that proves that some people don't like Barnett plates.

Stock Kawi plates have worked the best in our dragbike, you can get the ones for the early 2000s ZX10 or GSXR 1000, they are the same plates. Just make sure you get the thickness you need, they vary in the modern clutch packs.

The cure for the slipping clutch on my s2 ended up being factory modern Kawasaki plates, well scuffed stock steels and Barnett springs. Barnett kept sending me wrong or a mixes bag of different springs so I called the tech guy and said wtf! He said the s2 part part number was wrong in his master catalog and then he finally got it wright. Its now one of the best overall clutches in my fleet.
Cheers.

If you plan on running heavier than stock springs (KZ 1000/Barnett etc) you will likely need a better clutch release than the Kaw steel/nylon setup. This release will deform and not release the plates properly (at least that is what happened to me). The release needed will be either the Kaw ball bearing or a Sytec FWIW.
