Yes, the thread-cleanup moderator will be busy with it very shortly I'm sure. :)

One process I do for my aluminum auto distributors in stock refinsh is to first glass bead blast them after thorough chemical degreasing. Then, with a Brillo pad, wet, I hand finish the beaded aluminum.

Bead blasting opens the surface pores of the metal, which allows dirt, greases, other stuff "dirty up" the finish. The Brillo pad closes those pores back down, so the contaminants don't have a chance to stick. Cleanup is from wiping the aluminum off, to car wash level.

This distributor was so dirty, nobody wanted it, then, I did the cleanup, glass bead blast, and Brillo pad treatment to the body area below the hold down clamp, the rest of it above that is "billit look". Just an FYI of one way to do it.

I have used glass beads , wire wheel, sanding and polishing on different projects.
When I refurbished this RS distributor I bought used, I used a less polished finish. I did not think shiny would look correct.

This leads me to ask, how far should I go with the front struts and engine covers.
Since I have never owned any new bikes, what did they look like originally on the 1972 H2? I would like to try and match that.

I still suggest on a scrap piece of aluminum, glass bead blast, then under warm water, by hand, Brillo pad. See if you like it.

I'll give the steel wool a shot, I just don't want it too mirror like.

On the flip side, my pistons, cylinders, and heads are back. Cylinders look good, ports chamfered, and heads done to match cylinder bore. I have to check ring gaps tomorrow. It will be awhile before I assemble, many little things ahead of that.

A Brillo pad works better than plain steel wool.

Wheels and seat projects underway. Wheels have been taken down to the hubs. New rims and spokes on the way, along with new seat foam and cover. I also ordered new tapers bearings for the steering stem.

They came in today. Hoping to get the hubs done soon so I can lace them up.
