First time posting and have been reading alot in the restoration section as l have a 1974 H1E.
Question is what could be leaking oil on throttle side of engine.
Engine has only 2.2 miles on the rebuild and sits on side stand only.
Pushed out of storage and fired up and ran for 5 minutes to run stabalizer through and then pushed back in storage.
Next day was a small puddle about 5" on right side floor.
Checked the engine bolts and could see oil on outside of the lowest bolt.
Cleaned up the oil and came back few days later and another bigger spot.
If the engine is leaking oil would it not have to running or at least in the upright position?
Is there an oil line in that area?
How to tell difference from crank case or injection system?
Looking for checklist to find problem so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Chris, welcome to the board. The engine doesn't have crankcase oil, just transmission oil and oil from the injection system. Usually the injector oil is dyed a different color from the transmission oil so you can tell which it is. You say the oil puddles under the right side of the engine? Maybe your clutch cover is leaking at its gasket or at the kick starter or shift shaft seal. Clean it off, coat it with talcum powder, and look for where it's coming from. If the banjo fitting from the oil tank is leaking you'd also get oil on the right side.

The oil pumps tend to get wear from the umbrella seal on the cable shaft. First find out which oil it is, and if it is injection oil, do as Jim wrote, but pull the oil pump cover and clean that also. To check for leaks. Another thing if you removed the oil lines from the pump, the aluminum washers are a one use only item. So that could be a source, if so, do not try ot over tighten, you will either break the bolts or strip out the oil pump, it is pot metal. Stat-o-seals are a good option in any case.

I will try the talcom powder to try and trace source (good idea).
I have to get my jack to hold upright first.

Will report back when can (it is a winter project and have visit storage area each time to work on it).

Finally got back to this.

Took the chambers off and got down under the engine.

Couple of sprays of Talc shows trail from the back center stud nut.

Appears to be dark colour while the leaked oil is clear?

It has basically stopped since I moved to new winter storage facility (could it have been overfilled?).

Still having problems getting my jack to work (spacing off) so crawling under a pain.

I intend to install an oil shut off valve for the injector oil just to be sure.

The right way to do that is get a valve with an integral switch, and wire it so that when the oil is shut off, the ignition is killed.

Could also be leaking from transmission vent.

Ok finally got back on forum and had chance to update progress.
Got on jack and used tie downs to hold in place.
Leak still going strong and can't see where as jack is blocking view.
Checked oil level and down about 1/2 quart from transmission.
Drained oil and replaced with red Tranny Fluid which is easier to see when talcom powderd.
See if leaks again (put in 2 quarts).
What is the capacity of the gear box oil?

H1 oil capacity is 1.3 Qt.

I'm thinking of doing this on one or more of my bikes- can you post up some pics and installation instructions when you have time? Thanks! :thumbup:
