I read in one of the period magazines (or possibly on a board) that when the H1 came out, the factory recommended method of a drag race launch was to dump the clutch and light up the rear tire. I'm guessing that with modern rubber and a mostly stock bike that this would go badly if I tried it.

Tonight I'm going to the local strip to practice starts on my road race bike. Bringing the H1 along to try out what I haven't been hooligan enough to do on the street, yet.

Any advice is welcome . . .

Hey Jim,

You are correct, about dumping the clutch, bad things will happen.

What I do:

keep one finger on the front brake

left foot on the peg ready to shift (it will come fast)

Get the revs up first to 5, or 6 grand (you will have to play with this RPM)

Then when you go, FFEEEEDDD the clutch out to keep in the powerband. If it bogs, then start at a higher RPM.

It's tuff on the clutch, but the quickest way to get going. Be ready to shift, hold up on the lever with your boot, when it's time to shift, pull up on the lever and HOLD it all the way up until you are back on the gas. This way you won't hit a neutral. I don't use the clutch, just back off the throttle very quick whille shifting into the next gear.

Here is a vid from years ago, yes I am asleep at the tree........ :banghead

I been wanting to do that too. So what if I don't get a great time. Just to do it would be fun. Be careful, have fun.

I would add:
Get your junk up on the tank and be ready.
IMO, you want it to spin and NOT hook up until you are really good at getting the balance of spin, wheelie, and gone.
RB is a master of this launch; should be a bunch of videos at Shakey in the UK of Mr. Brett launching on the strip.
