On riding the Devil’s Triangle: after much study I conclude it’s not that great. Not saying the triangle itself wouldn’t be a fun ride; just that for the miles and time driven there are better options. For example, the triangle is: • 190 mile round trip • Out-and-back over the same roads • No truly good place to stop for lunch • 90 round trip miles are stop & go traffic on the outskirts of Maryville, Knoxville, and part of I-140. • A full 47% plus of the ride would suck. • Round trip saddle time would be roughly 4 ⅓ hours. I looked at an alternative. One made up of roads which I have been on, at least in part. The route is as follows: Hwy 28 to Franklin Hwy 64 to east of Brevard Hwy 276 to Waynesville Blue Ridge Pkwy to Cherokee Hwy 74 to Hwy 28 Hwy 143 to Robbinsville Hwy 129 back to Gap HQ’s • This is a loop so it’s not an out-and-back over the same roads thing like the triangle. • The loop is 235 miles, 45 miles longer than the Devils Triangle • Only 70 miles total of uninteresting roads • Time in the saddle roughly 4 ½ to 5 hours; 20 to 30 minutes more than the triangle. • Lunch in Waynesville: locally owned place downtown: perfect place for us with curb-side parking. • Only 30% of the ride would suck as opposed to the 47% with the triangle thing. (This 30% is more roads with some traffic going through a few small towns - as opposed to the outskirts of big cities and interstate) It would be great if some of you guys would be up for this ride: you won’t be disappointed. One of those rides that would provide endless fodder around the campfire that night. The best time to take a ride like this would be on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I’ll be ready Monday. |

Good write up. Does lunch in Waynsville include a look at wheels through time? |

It opened today, link to its schedule of open days. http://www.wheelsthroughtime.com/admiss ... hours.html Two years ago it was going to be moved out west but that fell thru. It's worth the trip just to talk to Trapper James, I shot this vido in 2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj1y90vn ... ature=plcp |

For accuarcy, I've edited my initial post above. I've changed the number of miles of suckie roads from 30 miles to 70 miles, raising the percentage of suckie roads to 30% (as opposed to the 47% for the triangle). I also noted that: The 30% is largely made up of roads with some traffic going through a few small towns - as opposed to the outskirts of big cities and interstate found with going to the triangle. Most of this is on Hwy 64 going between Highlands and the turn onto Hwy 276 just east of Brevard. I'll take a look at gasoline stations to chart locations for fill-ups....say every 90 miles or less. |
