Shopping for deals on Evaporust and came across this. Anyone have any experience with it? I would imagine a water stop bath is needed after soaking parts right? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Klean-Strip- ... /100406369 ![]() |

Hmmmnnn . . . That sounds suspiciously like the properties of the liquid that SUDCO sells at $147 a Gallon ![]() |

See how much money I just saved ya pardner??? You're up late, or early.... Best deal I found on Evaporust was a 5 gallon pail for about 90 dollars. Would be more but I have Amazon prime for free shipping. Generally it is around 25-30 per gallon and even more expensive in smaller bottles. So how do I know this? Be careful when the seller shows a gallon jug but is selling a 32oz one..... ![]() |

Those phosphoric acid treatments have the same basic ingredients, but the concentration may be very different. Good price, though, and worth a try. Lane |

I think the prep and etch is more or less a "light duty" product for prep. of lightly rusted steel/car panels, etc. when you are getting it ready for paint, or coatings, whatever. (hence the name!). It won't remove rust like Evaporust, which is the one to use for tank interiors and heavy duty rust removal. I used various prep&etch products in the Body-shop trade for years, and I've used evaporust for serious rust removal....... my 2 bob's worth!! |

As Lane said, a lot of the rust removing and rust converting products use phosphoric acid. Wikipedia has some information about it. I'm glad to know the chain stores have it, Steve. It's interesting that the sales writeup says it's non-toxic. Here's the MSDS: http://www.kleanstrip.com/uploads/docum ... -401.5.pdf |

Phosphoric is also what is in "Naval Jelly". It works great for brushing on hard-to-reach places, etc. Yes you have to wash it thoroughly, but water will neutralize it. I consider it "safe" and easy to work with. For gas tanks and other bad parts, I always use muriatic acid (hydrochloric). That stuff works FAST and it pours like water. It can be tricky to get it fully neutralized. Flush with water then a water/baking soda mix. Using straight muriatic is a favorite trick of mine for removing stuck cylinders. It doesn't take long for it to eat through the rusted studs and free the cylinder without harming it. The best part -- its CHEAP at the hardware store! |

Phosphoric acid is used in Coke and Pepsi - I remember in the 60's there were demonstrations of those products etching right through a galvanized nail. That stuff also puts a nice clean finish on aluminum parts, just soak and brush with a toothbrush. |

That's a lot better than 25 per gallon. I tried searching Ollie's website, it sucks big time. Closest one to me is New Hartford (Utica) 45 miles away. I can get the 5 gallon pail delivered with NYS sales tax for just under $90 so that's 18 per gallon. And its in a big enough bucket to soak stuff in as well. |
