The piece in the bottom photo is broken all right but it's steel.

I made another one out of some flat plate, which is under the broken one in the photo.

Yea I yanked that filter first thing.

I love these old bikes no matter the size. We all become an archaeologist as we take them apart seeing what hands have touched them over the years and how skilled those hands were and in many cases weren't.

Thanks mraxl on the service manual I downloaded that weeks ago. The depth of info you have there is impressive.
