I completely disassembled it, cleaned everything in the parts washer, chemically stripped the cases, bead blasted the head and cylinder, had new valve guides installed, valves ground, new valve seals, cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned some more, then painted, checked tolerances on the crank, cam and pistons, put on new rings, new gaskets, new seals, new head bolts, new crankcase bolts, new screws, new cam chain rollers and guides and pillows, new orings and new cable guides and new covers(everything Kawasaki NOS). I have right a crapload of hours in the engine, not to mention the carbs. I do all the work myself except for the machine work on the valves and the valve guides.

Then, your mechanic should already know about those link plates on the adjusters.

For you, if you go to motogrid, and look at the carb exploded view, part number 55 says it is a washer, but, is actually a link plate with two holes in it. Stocker's are VERY flimsy and bend easily, especially when they are being moved around during balancing adjustment. when you adjust one carb, and tighten the lock nut up, the bar moves/bends and un-adjusts the other carb. It ends up back and forth, many times, and usually, the carbs never end up balanced close enough to work well.

What I used to do with them is make two plates out of steel that were 3 times as thick, so they don't distort when adjusting the carb balance. I looked into doing different adjusters for them decades ago, but, ended up doing below.

What we used to do, not caring back then about historically correct, is to buy brand new later 1978 Z1R carb sets from American Turbo-Pak for a C note, straight off new bikes that were being turbo'd, and put 'em on the older bikes. The adjusters on the later bikes made up for the frustration of the early carbs refusing to adjust well past irritating the tech into a postal episode. I have known a few techs that flatly refused to even try to adjust 'em, postal episodes and all.

I have seen techs keep adjusting so long, that head pipes blued from heat while the process frustrated along. If you guys get to the point you have trouble with them, ask for help.

I put the engine in today, it went pretty smooth. The chrome should be here by this weekend so I can lace the wheels and put it together. The lay the engine down and lower the frame over it worked great.

I have been assembling for two weeks now and I am almost there, waiting for the wheels to get back so I can lace them up and hang them. There isn't a whole lot left to do. I am getting excited to see it done.

I still remember my first ride on a early Z1 way back when. I had a Honda CB750 and sold it soon after riding the Z1. Been a Kawasaki fan
ever since. Beautiful bike and brings back memories
