Any easy way to clean the stator and such other than a fine tooth comb? Trying to clean the electrical up and its quite dirty after a few years of sitting not to mention having been on the bike itself. Have a couple complete units as well as parts and want to pick through the best of it for the project bike .Thanks

take the unit to a company that rework electric motors, they will know how and what to use, one wrong move the unit will be history

It's a fairly robust piece, and doesn't really care if it's clean. Other than cleaning dust and spider webs out of it, there's not much you need to do. A stiff bristled 1" paint brush works well for that.

Petrol and a stiff brush, just done mine after finding 1" of water in there then finish with WD40

Like tankie said, taking the unit to experts would be the most recomended.

One of my units was looking so bad with oil and dust, that I figured the acid stuff and bacterias in there would soon eat the copper wires and decided to take the risk and did this:

Immersed the unit in a good quality refined kerosene and brushed it with a fine painting brush to remove the oil. The unit looked clean but I didn't want that oily kerosene in it, so I took the risk once again and immersed it in water with neutral detergent :eh: and brushed it gently till clean. Rinsed in water  , hang it under the sun and air sprayed the unit till dry. May sound crazy but it is now clean, free of oil, bacterias and acid. Tested the unit and every reading was fine and it is fine to present. Not that I recommend anyone to do this, but in my personal opinion it is better having a clean unit, that one filled with corrosive dirt media.

few cans of electric motor cleaner. yes, they do make the stuff, its safe for the windings.

dirt/grime = trapped heat = failure.

I'll look into the electric cleaner , not so sure about the water immersion . I've got time and a spare unit so I'll give it a shot , Thanks

Something to consider is rubbing alcohol... brush on and then rinse with it.
Kerosene will work too but leave an oily film.
