I wanted to know if anyone (ELSE) had ever experienced this: In around 1984, A buddy and myself were going to hollywood speedway one evening, from Miami to see some drag racing. We were on our H2s. mine a 72. His a 75...We stopped on the turnpike to dig into our pockets and get change for the toll. My buddy forgot to engage neutral and when he let out the clutch, the bike stalled. We paid the toll and he quickly re-started the bike, but it "backfired" when it started. When we took off, my bike was fine and pulled away. His bike, however, went backwards! I turned around to help and to our amazement the 75 was running in reverse! Each time the clutch was released the bike backed up. We shut it down and re started it and it seemed fine. He continued to own that bike for quite a while and it never happened again. I have never seen it again and have never met anyone else that has either! ANY ONE? |

I witnessed the same thing when I was a teenager... My buddy could bump start his bike to run in reverse... I chalked it up to the timing being so far off enabled this to happen... ![]() ![]() |

My hopped up RD will do that on a rare occassion.....very rude.....but a real hoot in the Deals Gap parking lot around the cruiser crowd. Someone can correct me; I think it can happen by the ignition timing being retarded closer to TDC. Or, it just simply gets a early pop. |

I had a little harley two stroke when I was a kid that would do it on its own , and you could push it backwards and do it. Any two stroke will run that way if the timing is close. Might be cool to do a big smoky burnout in reverse. ![]() John |

It's a timing thing. A 2 stroke doesn't care which way it runs. The closer to TDC the easier it is to start backwards. |

My 1936 Evinrude Elto Ace has an ignition advance lever that allows you to set the timing about anywhere you like, and it's the only speed control lever. The rope starter notches are symmetrical, so when you want to back up the boat, you stop the engine, set the timing on the other side of TDC, wrap the rope around the flywheel backwards, and give a pull. |
