I just revisited the Sleaze-Bay ad, and, the sprocket is worn out BACKWARDS, appears to have been installed and worn reversed from the correct way, shoulder facing OUTWARD, not inward. Very clever. |

Some years ago, when my pal Steve Whitelock owned AFAM Sprockets and chains, Dirt Bike Magazine wanted to test a few different brands and types of chains. they had a quandary, as they wanted a bunch of sprockets, a pair for every type of chain. Their test included 6 different brands of chain. I listened intently to the discussion, then, sat back and came up with a solution, one set of sprockets for the chain testing. They all went bonkers. "can't do that", "different results", all sorts of "Dave is crazy" Steve asked me how I'd do it. "Simple, Steve. The chain needs to be 120 pins long. 120 divided by 6 is 20 pins in length. Cut 20 links from each chain, and make them into one 120 link chain, continuous, no master links, and run all 6 of 'em at once, ONE set of sprockets. Measure the chains after a set time, and record the results". That is the exact way it was done, the "Crazy Dave" method. I think the person selling this sprocket should not sell it, but, put it back on the bike, the correct direction, and wear it out on the other side of the teeth, making it into a 15 point Ninja Throwing Star (shuriken). |

That's funny, Dave. I actually have a friend who wore his KZ400's rear sprocket so much that you couldn't reverse it. It wore so much that the tops of the teeth broke off completely so it was just a bumpy disk. The funny thing was that I had to point out the problem... he hadn't noticed. I guess the KZ400 engine didn't put out enough torque to make the chain slip. Your "test chain" idea was very clever. |
