Well I'm checking online re booking my flight to come to the meet at Deals Gap. Lots of options, so I need some advise please.

This is what I've found out so far....

I can travel from Barbados (BGI) via Dallas / Fort Worth Texas (DFW) to Knoxville, TN (TYS) but the flight arrives at 11.00pm. Which is a no-no, arrives too late at night, then there is immigration, then the long ride to Deals Gap.

I can book a flight from Barbados to Miami or Dallas, then take another flight to TN. However, there will be a stop-over for a couple of hours. So which is the nicer / better airport option and can I leave the airport, and maybe visit a friend / shop whicle I wait?

Atlanta, Georgia - Hartsfield-Jackson Airport
Charlotte, NC - Douglas
Chicago, Illinois - O'Hare

Next question, which is the better / more reliable airline - Continental, Delta, United, US Airways?

Thanks.

Knoxville airport is small and there are motels right across the road.... you might consider just spending the night there if connections/price are favorable. It's about an hour to the Gap.

Avoid Atlanta if possible... one of the biggest in the US. O'Hare is way out of the way. Dallas is ok if connecting flight terminals are close together. Never been to Charlotte or Miami airports. I would think Charlotte or Miami would be the closest route with less travel time except for layovers.

All airlines suck.... customs is a PIA! My guess is that Charlotte would be the easiest to get thru customs, but that is a guess.

I haven't checked on any of this, and I'm not sure if you listed Charlotte as a final destination or a stopover, but if you can get to Charlotte cheaply, check to see if you can rent a car from there and drive to DG cheaper than flying to Knoxville. If so, you get a car of your own while you're at DG maybe.

Even if its a pain to get to one away from the airport, always try to rent vehicles away from the airport.
They hit you with all kinds of airport and "convenience fees".
Went to Vegas a few years ago and it ended up costing us an extra 69 bucks in airport fees.
Rented a better vehicle later on for half the cost away from the airport.

I used to be a road warrior pre and post 9/11, they suck today because of it. Customs always a crap-shoot on how long it will take to get through it, could be quick, could be long.

Miami is generally pretty good since it's a big international gateway, I've been through it a lot in the past but not recently.

I suggest you weigh the costs including layover hotel charges, cabs etc versus time it takes in total.

Renting a car adds to the expense, but gives you a lot of options both traveling and/or arranging someone picking you up at an airport. I don't think anyone here would have a problem picking you up with reasonable scheduling, Knoxville being close. I think John and I got a hotel there on the way out last time since we did not want to drive down the Dragon at night and very tired.

Do a matrix of cost vs time vs available pickup vs convenience of a car - yada yada yada.

Lisa,
PS: If you can get Tortuga Dark Rum (Cayman) locally and bring some with you, I'll reimburse you and always be your friend!

Charlotte is a decent airport.

If you are renting a car anyway, keep in mind that DG is only about 3.5 hours from Atlanta.
