Post subject:  Snowmobile triple expansion chambers ?

Ok so I went to a potomac vintage riders sponsored swap meet in york pa this past weekend. I noticed a set of chambers and asked the guy if he knew anything about them. he told me he had them in his rafters for the past 15 yrs and was told they were off a kawasaki triple snow mobile? they appear to all go to one side and have a set of stinger ends on them.

Anyone heard of fitting them to a street bike?

Perhaps cut and re weld if necessarily?

Pipes are almost the most important componant in a 2 stroke making power. Pipes are designed for port timing, displacement, stroke and powerband. I don't think any of those will compare on a street triple......

Yes I understand. But if they made power on a kawasaki 2stroke snow sled, why wouldnt they work on a street sled? provided they did not have to be hacked much of course.... :?

I am not sure what if any differences there are in a motor based on which frame it sits in....are the chambers not tuned in a snow mobile?

forgive my ignorance I don't know that's why I am asking???? My knowledge of snowmobiles is about as in depth of my knowledge in speaking mandarin Chinese

The problem I see is that you'd be using a tuned exhaust system designed for a particular engine and application, and trying it on a completely different engine and application. The odds are that it wouldn't work very well, but it's possible you'd get lucky and it would work great. You'd have to be pretty lucky though. If the chambers are free, and if you can do the modifications needed to use them, you don't have a lot to lose except your time.

All dimensions of a expansion chambers are designed to return the sound wave at the exact right time to cram fresh intake charge in the pipe, back into the cylinder. To determine this, designers use, when the ports open, how big the cylinder is, what rpm for them to work, how long the rod is. Sometimes it's only a few mm difference will make a pipe work or not.

How many cylinders doesn't matter, the pipe has to be designed to the cylinder. I seriously don't think any of the parameters match between the 2 motors......

OH.....I see. thanks to both of you for the explanation!

I wasn't sure with any certainty that there in fact was a difference in the motors...
