Is my rear brake getting weaker or did it always suck?

I doubt I could lock up the rear brake on my H2 using reasonable pressure
At speed, the only thing it really does is unload the front forks
Has mine gottern worse or do they all really suck?
The EX mod up front works great and stopping is not an issue; just wondering if my rear brake should be better; new Versah shoes a few years back and doubt there are 5,000 miles of sensible driving on them

How often do you use it? Did the shoes ever seat (they don't do much until they seat). :?

With only moderate force I locked my back wheel (small S1 hub on an H1) last fall at 50 mph trying to avoid a deer! :o

How many miles of driving like a bat out of hell are on them?

My H2 rear brake will lock the wheel, but I have to set it so there's very little pedal travel before the brake comes on, or it hits my right chamber before skidding the wheel.

While working in a dealership after new pads or shoes were installed we hit the brakes really :!: hard a couple of times on the test ride to seat the new pads or shoes.

No really hard miles on the brakes at all.
Perhaps they never set in properly.
My pedal has to be set with little travel due to right chamber as well.

I'm the same as Jim and it's a fine line on enough play to lock the rear wheel AND enough pulling on the tail-light switch - although my front brake turns the light on too and I'm usually using the front and rear brake at the same time anyway (unless I'm running from the cops and don't want them to see my tail-light come on)...

I just took a ball-peen to my original denco's and made a dent for a little more pedal play :e6 ... I did the same thing when I had stockers on it too :e16

Did you remove the glaze off the drum during any of these replacements? Excessively hard/prolonged use of new brakes overheats/burns them making the seating process even longer. Firm but short brake applications seems to work best (with patience)...

On mine I broke the glaze off the drum and lightly sanded the shoes (like I do on every brake job that doesn't get the drums / rotors turned).

How critical is the angle of the lever at the hub for maximum mechanical advantage?

90 degree angles will give the most leverage. With a good front brake, the rear should barely slow you down with a hard stomp.
