I saw this on Brad's site. "I know that "original" type denim/leather vests have been [virtually] compulsory wear for H.D. riders for years, but now there is a[serious] proposal that riders in Ireland be required to wear [on "safety"grounds]the brightly coloured variant. I reckon this misses the point, since just as on construction & etc sites, people who don`t look - won`t see them anyway." When I had my shop in Merced, Ca., there was an Air Force base close by, with lots of riders. I serviced most of their bikes. One day, a rider comes in, he was a regular, I took care of his V65 Magna, with a story. Seems that was the very first day the Department of Defense required EVERY person in the military that rode a motorcycle, on or off road, to wear those highway worker orange vests, with reflective stripes on them. There he was, standing there with his BRAND NEW high visibility safety vest on, bright orange as could be. This fellow then comes into the shop, just livid, and drags me out to his bike. The rear fender, license holder and tail light were all bent up, straight up. So, I asked what the heck happened. Seems the fellow had JUST got his bike out from over night storage, had the vest on for less than 3 minutes, was stopped at a stop sign on base, waiting for cross traffic to stop, so he could continue. From the rear, he gets hit by a lady in a Lincoln, MarK VII ramming barge, or whatever. The woman got out of the car, and asked if the fellow was OK, and stood there and said "I really did not see you, I am sorry". She called her husband, and he came right over from his office immediately. He was Castle Air Force Base's Base Commander, the Head Poo-Bah of the base, his wife was the ramming agent. Once it was all calmed down, and nobody was hurt, it became absolutely hilarious, in a strange, weird kind of way. Less than 3 minutes, rammed in the rear. "I really did not see you". |

I had a neighbor that had a jap "cruiser", he came over one day and asked if I had a spare helmet, as he couldn't get on base without one. Of course, it was strapped on the sissybar, till he got to the gate, and then came of when he left..............

As a fellow rider,I notice them from a mile away. People in cars seem oblivious to them.

well my bike have INDICATORS and LIGHTS, they even work in the dark! And if thats not going get people to see me in traffic no stupid ass vest is either. |

H2Tunners story is funny, no one got hurt, and it sounds like the guy wasn't hit (rammed) at speed but rather a crawl typical of people rolling up at a stop light. I have an office on an Army base and have to wear HiViz. I just bought a nice HiViz jacket that I now use off base as well. Some sportbike guys in my area do this. Most pirates wear some cheap litte belt they can take off so as to return to the pirate look off base. So very cool. The arguement that people who aren't looking are not going to see you anyway is cute to say, obviously true, but it misses the point:the point is, people take a quick look up the road, miss the motorcycle and then pull out. Working around a large base I can witness people with and without. You are definitly far more noticable with a HiViz jacket. Maybe not so with some little belt size strap. It's like not wearing a helmet.....you want to take the chance.....knock yourself out. I don't want the government telling me what to wear but, why in the world would folks find something wrong with trying to be safer.....

I don't see the down side... Even if it were legislated. I have a lime green helmet, I'd probably have a bright jacket as well if the one I wear wasn't a gift. |

If it had a Harley logo and some of the bad boys on TV started wearing them it might become acceptable for the masses. |

I have a whole motorcycle that colour - Kawasaki sports bike! (Seriously, I would prefer a lime-green bike to a black one for the visibility aspect alone.) |
