Does anybody know of a suitable replacement, maybe from an auto parts store to avoid paying $10-$15 for this o-ring? This fits behind the sprocket, between the spacer and the roller bearing as pictured.

Do you have bearing shops over there.... easy to find, hardware, auto-parts, etc?

Rod I might be able to find it at an auto shop. I don't think we have any bearing shops on Oahu.

If you have the old one, auto parts store, as noted, bearing houses, and, your local hardware store. Although the one you have is metric, the U. S. Measure ones will work just fine, they are both close to rack other. Also, on the seal race (collar) one end should have a larger "champher" to accommodate the O Ring.

I'm assuming the O-ring should be viton.

There was no Viton back then. Buna-N was what was used. Viton would be better.

Make sure the O Ring goes up against the bearing, then collar, with that larger taper twirds the O Ring. In the diagram, the red arrows get it where it should be. I don't recall any FDM on that, but putting the O Ring between the collar and sprocket makes for a leak source that is somewhat hard to find.

"FDM" - 'Factory Directed Modification'. There are also regular SB, Service Bulletins, they change parts and procedures as needed. An FDM is always a change to parts, parts placement, procedures that must be adhered to. Remember, SB, FDM weren't usually available to the public, nor motorcycles, they were to direct service persons to revise correctly.

The Resources website used here is excellent in having SBS and FDM's available.

McMaster-Carr has them for less than $10 for a pack of 10, but shipping will double that unless you're already placing an order anyway.

22mm is .865. 1.5mm is .060. Not rounded off, close enough to work for us.

Metric "O" rings are readily available in auto parts stores.
