pulled baffle out of pipe going to freeze the pipe to try and get the dent out is it normal for it to have this much oil on it? what kind of material is this should I replace the material, leave it alone, take it off?

Welcome to the board, goshdarn. It's not unusual. You should take if off and clean the silencer core, and replace the fiberglass packing with something suitable. There are several products on the market for 2-stroke packing, and you can find them at places that deal with dirt bikes.

Not only do I have my triple I have four 2-stroke dirt bikes - I do a lot of packing. The Amazon link Dale (MRAXL) shows is fine and a good price. I support local stores so I buy it there at about twice the cost though.

One wrap around is fine. I use safety wire in a couple places to hold it in and that's it.

Also use a torch to burn off the old oil and carbon.

One thing you might run into once the dampening material is off the baffle is carbon buildup in the holes and inside areas you may not be able to get to, to clean. What I do is to use a torch to heat the baffle up, drying out the carbon. Once the baffle has cooled back off, the carbon should loosen and either fall off, or be easily removed.

Although there are many different packing materials, I simply use a fine metal screen on the baffle itself, with a fiberglass wrapping. I have even used the fiberglass from a water heater blanket to wrap some baffles. Mostly, if the baffle isn't a fully open one, one that has a series of areas the exhaust flows into and out of along its path, I don't even use wrapping.

From what the pictures shows, it looks like a straight through baffle, and should be wrapped.

Is there another purpose to use dampening material other than reducing sound?

There is some evidence that performance is slightly better with fiberglass than empty silencers, but I've never seen a comparison of packed silencers to unsilenced stingers. Unsilenced stingers are horrendously loud though, unless the stingers extend forward into the middle of the chambers.

Yes, harmonic distortion can make for some adverse issues in performance.

A case in point on a car, in the middle 1960's, Chevrolet produced both small and big block engine'd vehicles, nice stuff. their exhaust systems had issues with harmonic distortion in the 2K RPM range, so, GM installed both mufflers and RESONATORS in the exhaust systems, to dampen the distortions. Harmonics are a lot more important in two stroke exhausts, than in 4 strokes, as the distortions can adversely effect almost all facets of performance, especially carburetion, as there are both positive and negative pressure/noise waves in the two stroke system.

I'd say wrap 'em.
