Maybe I'm missing something obvious but how would it be possible to kick start backwards?

I think it happens when the engine fires shortly before it comes to a stop after kicking, so it's moving slowly and still before TDC, and the firing gives it a kick backwards. I've never had my H2 do it, so I have to think something needs to be out of whack for it to happen with that engine.

does not have to backfire. rd's do this frequently when you run dyna ignitions (why dyna quit making them for rd's) and some cdi's. the trick is to get a longer dwell in the circuit. never seen a triple do it but if the timing is uber advanced it can. some old outboard motors as jim said, use this method for an actual reverse.

better hope it doesnt catch the kickstart gear.... cause this is what happens

My first dirt bike was a 71 DT250 that came in various boxes. I finally got it together and when I finally got it started, it was running backwards.

My "know it all" room mate informed that was impossible, jumped on the bike , reved it up and proceded to "smack the boys" on the gas tank.

The extra dent in the tank was well worth it

I had a mate with a Maico350 that use to do it in the 70s , broke his leg one day when it went backwards after back firing half way up a hill :wtf: , the old inboard boats here use to have water cooled 2strokes , that to go backwards you stopped and pullstarted it the oposite way  they were great old timber hulled river and lake boats old put-puts

Kevin Cameron's H2R, with the whacky Krober ignition, did that more than once at
Daytona in 1973. Cliff Carr was not impressed with it.

Outboard boat engines are started both directions, to give forward and reverse movement.

Reverse on modern snowmobiles works the same way...by spinning the engine backwards.

outboards, golf carts, snowmobiles, many have experimented with reversing the engine to obtain reverse
