Well, we are ATF buddies, I did much the same!! (I'm fine with an 80W gear-oil, really!)

When I got my H2 it was six years old, and the clutch slipped. The hot trick at the time was ATF, so I put it in. The clutch was better, and it was easier to shift when it was 15F out and I wanted to get to school that morning. I was told I'd have all kinds of bad effects when I took my transmission apart, but it's going back together with a snap ring replaced, and 2nd gear on the output shaft changed because the I rounded the dogs a bit. There was some sludge in the bottom of the case. It wasn't a lot, but I assume it's because there's no detergent in ATF to keep it suspended. Isn't it good to not keep wear particles suspended?

Anyway, I'm going to put 80W-90 gear oil in and see how I like it. If I don't, guess what's going back in.

ATF is very high detergent. I run only Lucas 80/90 in my 2 strokes. It is relatively cheap and readily available.

That just goes to show that I need to verify my Internet sources better before I believe them.

ATF is not a gear lubricant, it is a modified high pressure hydraulic fluid that will lube low stress automatic transmissions, NOT manual gearboxes.

Gear oil WITHOUT Moly (molybdenum di-sulfide) should be good to go for motorcycle transmissions with web clutches, and, limited slip car differentials.

4 stroke motorcycle engines use, of course, engine oils, but, they shouldb e formulated for the 4 cycle engine, AND wet clutch and transmission, NOT for your old 1959 Chevy inline 6.

I believe that gear oil is a better gear lubricant, but on the other hand, with 40,000 miles on my H2 transmission with ATF in it and such a small amount of wear, even on the forks, I can't say ATF is particularly bad.

When I got my H2, the handbook advised ATF for the transmission. So I did several years of road-racing and a squillion street miles with no gearbox issues at all. In fact, regardless of the gearbox lubricant, I'm surprised at the longevity and durability of the H2 gearbox. I may have mentioned this before!!

I've sden, and redone so many transmissions that were run on ATC, of all 4 brands, it isn't funny. And, the factoryt revised manuals after finding the same sort of failures from it.
