I was working in MN last week, and have to be in Aspen, CO next week to work some more, so I had time to kill. I brought my ZRX1100, and got a room in Rapid City, SD. Did a couple of 300 mile days, went to Mt. Rushmore one day, Devil's Tower, WY the next, and lots of loops and National Forest Roads.

The trip took a nasty turn yesterday that could have been really bad. I spent the day driving through Wyoming on the way to Ft Collins, CO. I was a few miles from my friend's house when the state police pulled me over for no tags on my trailer. I explained that TN does not have trailer registration, and he didn't believe that and took all my stuff and went to his car to check.

He comes back in twenty minutes and said the trailer was stolen in FL with a John Deere lawn tractor on it, and that it would be impounded, and that I was likely going to jail. I bought the trailer in FL from the manufacturer, and was pretty sure I had the paperwork at home. The problem is my wife was at my grandson's ball game (a big playoff) and an hour and a half away. I called her and sent her toward home and called my friend. Ruined her evening.

The cop filled out a shitload of paperwork, with a court date that I had to come back to CO for, and said that I was in trouble with FL, too, and it became clear it wasn't getting better. He said that he wouldn't arrest me, but every time I tried to clear up what would happen to my motorcycle, he offered to take me to jail to clear it up there.

He finally agreed to let me unload the motorcycle, and leave it on the side of the road. I unloaded the bike, unhooked the trailer, and wrote down the trailer serial number. When I compared it to the number on the warrant he gave me, it was different. WTF? The tow truck shows up, and I asked him to wait while I showed the cop the numbers, and asked him if there was a mistake. I figured it would just piss him off to ask him, but man I'm glad I did. He had written it down correctly, but the dispatch had gotten it wrong. He sort of apologized, I thanked him because I didn't want some other reason for trouble or a ticket. I hooked up the trailer and loaded the bike and got the hell away (after asking :D). He had told me that even if I found the paperwork etc. to prove it was mine, I would have to come back to CO for the court date, so I'm glad that I checked the number.

F**k me, that was unpleasant-it was more complicated than this and took a couple of hours. At every point of the thing he was as degrading as could be. My wife found the paperwork and has emailed it to me already.

Anyway, on to Aspen where I hope to ride through Rocky Mountain National Park at 14,000 feet. I won't have a lot of time, but hope to get in some evening rides. :)

If the pics are sideways, I'm not sure what to do. They are iPhone pics, and look right until posted on some boards???

Well that Cop was an Idiot :!: I guess mistakes happen but the stakes were high he should have made sure he was doing the right thing, Hooktool ya did good checking the paper work  .

Devils tower is pretty cool and an excellent ride I was out there 30 years ago on a GS750, there is or used to be a wood ladder that was used by a local rancher to scale the tower (100 years ago) I think his wife climbed it too, Devils tower is the magma of a huge prehistoric volcano that eroded away leaving just the magma

I thought everyone had seen Close Encounters? One could google Devil's Tower if you want to know more, but its a very cool thing to see, worth the hot ride out there. BTW, I don't think it's big enough on top for all that stuff they had in the movie, but then again, I didn't actually see the top. :D

The cop was a dick, no doubt and seemed to want to provoke me, but the older, wiser me :) didn't say anything smart-assed. Its the second time I've been stopped-once in Oklahoma, and I think that I can get a tag in TN, even though its not needed there. It may save me hassles down the road since I haul a bike a lot when I travel and work.

I should correct myself, I will ride over Independence Pass ( 12,000) feet, from Aspen, maybe a couple of times this next week.

I went for an awesome after dinner ride today from Ft. Collins-I had no idea what was just up the road from my friend's house. A 50 mile loop up and down the mountains, through a canyon along the river-NO traffic, smooth curvy road. But a fair amount of deer.

I reckon once you're safely out of Wyoming you send a nice letter to the head of the state police...
