Post subject:  H2 Cylinder ID

I'd like to build a spare H2 engine and have two sets of cylinders on hand to choose from. One set came off a '72 engine (H2E 16582) and the othe set a '73 (H2E 27256). I've been to the resource site and looked at the photo ID section for H2 cylinders. It appears that the cut-outs match those from the H2A for both sets.

The cylnder on the left came off the '73 motor. some other info. The '73 had 1/2mm overbore pistons and the '72 set has 1mm overbore. Is it feasible or practical to go to another overbore on the '72 set. Thanks for your advise on this one.

I'm currently running 2mm over, or 4th overbore on my early '72 H2. That makes it a 790cc H2. When I go to 5th over, I'll finally have an 800cc H2.

Jim, do both Wiseco and Wossner make the overbore that your running? Any idea why those sleeves look different?

I'm not a sleeve expert, so I don't want to guess about the differences. Last time I bought Wisecos, they were available at least to 4th over, but that was 30+ years ago. After having both brands, I prefer Wossners, and they're available to 5th over.

Great, thanks. After closer observation, it appears to me that someone did some cleanup on the '73 jugs. Just not sure if it would affect next overbore.

Yep, Someone has given the set on the left a bit of a clean-up - did you check for any difference in exhaust-port height, for instance?

It looks the same as the other one but I haven't checked for sure. Do you see any problems with another overbore from what was done? The other two look the same.

Must be the pic angle, the left cylinder liner sure looks thin, like it was .060 or .080 over.

The liner has been "knife edged" like the transfer dividers....

Yes, they have been hand finished, tho thin edges don't really achieve much. I am on .080" for the engine I am building now, I have heard of them going out to .100" w/o any ill effect.
