Hi all
Just stripping my forks down to have the inner tubes re-chromed - they need it!!, but on the bottom of the tube is a metal part that's not chrome as shown in the pics - can this be removed and if so any idea if it is removable and if so how do i get it of, or do i send it for re-chroming with this bit on and say not to chrome it?

Also, there is a metal band in a groove as shown in pics - does this also come off easily, wanted o ask as certainly son't want to risk breaking it?

No much info /videos on the drum brake models forks, everything seems to be for the disk version which has a different tube to mine.

Any recommendations on a "hard chrome plater" to use as well, who are we all using on the forum and are they good?

Everything comes off the tube... the snap ring and the bushing at the bottom.

No I hadn’t found it thanks for the link, looks like the parts will have to stay on when sent for chroming as you have to drill out the rivets to get them off the forks, then tap holes and fit flathead screws to mount them back. I have found a chromer that I am going to ring and see what they say, assume they must be able to mast bits off when chroming can’t be the first forks like this if that’s what they do. Thanks again for all your help.

Why not do it right and change the bushings? Drilling and tapping is not difficult.

Not sure the bushings are that available nothing came up in my search for the UK. Spoke to a chrome to found this morning and they said not a problem if there there, have had them like this before, they were also familiar with the groove with the wire band in being present. Sent some pics just waiting for quote incl delivery back to me as not local.

Reasonable quote from platers but asking if I can remove the wire band. The band shown in the pic on my opening post is quite thick in that groove - is it easy to remove cans if it gets misshaped is that a problem?

It's just a snap ring of sorts. You should be able to snag one end with a jeweler's screwdrive and work it out carefully.

Using some circlip pliers I have managed to get one off, obviously had to open the gap up with the pliers to remove it but whilst doing this it resulted in the ring not being as tight/springy in the groove. When I put it back do I try to clamp it with a pair of pliers and that should sort it?
