Be careful with the starting fluid, it's OK just to see if it will fire, but trying to keep it running for prolonged time can wash the oil off the cylinder walls. Not good, especially for 2 strokes!

Hi folks I'm new to the forum. I've got an 1972 S2 which I bought as a non runner years back and it's time to fire her up. I've thoroughly cleaned the carbs plus got three healthy sparks firing in time, but even with ether she barley fires? I'm now thinking outer crank seals? As a newby to Kwaka restoration I'm interested in recommendations for a good online parts site to deal with also does anyone know of alternative matching seal codes left and right that I can buy from a local engineering supply shop? |

Your problem is most likely carb related. It is doubtful seals are preventing startup. Here is a guide: http://kawatriple.com/manuals/carbtune/carbtune.htm Carbs must be totally disassembled and soaked in carb cleaner with fine wire run thru all ports. Also, the chances are that if you do have crank seal problems now or in the future, it's not just the outer seals. The resource site has procedures to check all the seals. www.kawatriple.com Welcome to the board! |

Thanks for your thoughts. I did a pretty thorough clean on the carbs, three times in fact. Soaked in carb cleaner for two days, all jets out inspected and cleared. What baffles me is surely you'd get a decent fire when you squirt a generous amount of either through the carb with an open slide? thats what makes me think there's a lack of pressure in the crank case? |

Strange that it doesn't fire on starting fluid with a good spark. Have you done a compression check on it? Compression test numbers would not be affected by leaky crank seals. The rings on the '72 H2 I got last year were completely stuck. It's possible yours isn't sealing well enough for good combustion. |

I've the had heads off, pistons and bore look good and Yes did a compression test and all three pots were consistent at about 125 each.Book says 156 but thats after engine is warm. I'm thinking next step is to borrow a paddock (rolling) starter to give it a bloody good wind up. Currently I'm cleaning the rust out the fuel tank with a battery and charger electrolysis rig- amazing! |

Be sure the points are connected to the correct coil/plug.... no wires crossed. |

She's a runner with bellows of blue!! Not quite sure whats changed other than I'd been sorting the loom out and had the key ignition barrel off its mount. I note it's rubber mounted and when loose was touching the frame so was it earthing and disrupting spark? Anyway she's a two kick runner at the mo. I'll now pull barrels and inspect the bottom end. |
