My 71 H1 is having some misfiring from 5.5k rpms on up to redline. The red light blinks on & off occasionally at that same rpm. I see this topic has been discussed before with many things to check. I have a new battery at 13.5V. The rectifier tested fine. I'm using a Lakeland CDI box. Before I tear apart the
electronics to get at the rotor and checking brushes, I have a question about the regulator. It is supposed to be at 53 to 55 ohms. Mine consistently is at 57.2 ohms. I assume that it needs to be replaced? Does anyone have a tested good reg that would sell me?

Or is this a better way to go other than wiring is a little confusing. https://www.regulatorrectifier.com/cata ... -regulator

Thanks, Andy

I'd check the rotor and brushes first, the slip rings on the rotor can bet dirty, and even loose on the rotor itself. Brushes can get worn out, and in some rare instances, literally bounce off the rings. Scotch-Brite cleans the rings.

Also, check all grounds, engine to frame, frame to battery box, etc.

I wouldn't expect a problem with that resistance measurement. What's the resistance of your meter leads, for example?

Blinking alternator light at high RPM? That could be the old alternator rotor failure, or it could be a problem with the carbon brushes on the slip rings.

Misfiring at high RPM could be a problem in the distributor or the coil, or the high voltage wires. Or the carburetors, actually.

I will start at the brushes and rotor. I replaced the coil and the issues haven't changed. The wires are new, distributor new, caps are new. Thanks for the info guys.

Rotor resistance Rx1 scale, slip ring to slip ring, 3.5 to 5.5 ohms. Slip ring to ground, open, no continuity.

The early rotors could break windings and lose continuity if a very serious missed shift over rev occurred.

Right, and the rotor winding failure can be intermittent once a wire comes loose, so it happens only at high RPM.

Friday I will tackle the rotor etc... So if the rotor is bad what are my practical solutions? Finding a replacement can't be very easy...

I see ONE used rotor on E-Bay, "offered at $149.95". Didn't someone used to rebuild/rewind them some time ago?

Im pretty sure the guy who rewound them passed away, he did a lot of stuff rewinding for many different bikes. I think he was in Alabama or something... I could be wrong I am going off what I know about Suzuki GS stuff , I think it was the same guy.

If I'm remembering right, there's a page in the resource site that tells how to repair the infamous early H1 rotor failure.
