73 H1D Hey its been so long since I actually had this thing back on the road. Does the headlight and horn power not work until after the bike has fired. I cant remember, I've got the tins off again and cant fire it, was putting in the newer headlight with new chrome ring and such and now cant fire the bike and the head light and horn don't work, everything else is perfect though LOL.posting.php?mode=post&f=14#

H/L & horn should work without engine running (assuming the battery is good).

Thanks that's all I needed to know, will review my error tomorrow after work!!! LOL The new headlight does not have its ground linked to the headlight itself like the originals. Will rectify it. Kind of like a 69 VW bug all grounds are linked.

Got the tester out today. Horn has power and just doesn't want to work from sitting for too long. However no power to the head light or the headlight switch. I can hot wire power to the switch but no power returns to the red black or red yellow striped wired that go to the head light. Either the switch is bad or the headlight does not gain power till after the bike is fired. Anyone have a 73 D to confirm this? Or possibly no power coming from the ignition switch but there is power everywhere else and everything else works so I doubt that's the case. But ya never know.

It's difficult to troubleshoot wiring on a message board.
Any brown wire should have battery voltage on it with ign sw on.
Any blue wire should have battery voltage on it with headlight on & ign sw on.
If blue has voltage then either red or red/yel should have voltage depending on hi/lo beam position.
If there is voltage on either red or red/yel and the headlight does not illuminate the bulb is bad (not likely for both hi & lo) or there is a missing ground wire connection (blk/yel).

Thanks after a lot of intense study of the diagram and voltage testing I tracked it down to a bad blue connector the one that feeds power to the high low switch. Looked ok but the wire just didn't make the connection to the end anymore, all is well !!!!!!

Is there a diagram of the horn components anywhere???? Took it apart got it to buzz a little, I think it wasn't put together correctly or missing a washer or something lol.

The screw at the back is sensitive but it adjusts the horn.... a little movement and it goes from working to not working.

FYI Guys, the horn was bad. At limes would draw too much power and blow the fuse. Replaced the horn everything works perfect LOL.
