Hi there,

I'm trying to get my 1976 KH400 back on the road, and one of the three pick up coils on the outside of the stator is cooked. Any idea how I can get a replacement, either new or used.

Thanks for the help,
Scott

Hi there, me again.

So I was able to get a pick up coil for my stator (thanks Johnny) and I put the stator back on the bike, along with cleaning the carbs, cleaning out the gas tank, etc.

The issue now, is that it is only running on the right cylinder. there is fuel and spark in the other two cylinders, but the spark is very weak. I rechecked the resistance on the exciter coil, and it was 180 between black and red (supposed to be 210-240) and 150 between white and black (supposed to be 180-210). Is this what's causing the bike not to run? And does anyone have this? (Johnny?) Also, which coils on the stator is this? and how do I check the whole stator out, before I put it back in again. I thought I had checked it the first time, but I must have misread the specs, or figured a little low wouldn't matter that much. Wrong!

Also, anyone know where I can find a flywheel puller to get this thing back off?

Thanks for any help/support you can give.

Take care,
Scott

Rear axle works as a puller on the 400 models.
Make sure the correct coils are matched to correct cylinders.

You do need a new lo spd coil..... http://lakeserv.net/kaw/kh400_low_speed_coil/index.html
Resetting the air gap on pickups and reducing plug gap MAY get it running on all three but it is only temporary... the lo spd coil will deteriorate to a point that it won't start at all.

Been there, done that.
Put Jims low speed coils on two KH400 stators recently.
Nice parts, great prices, thats Lakeland.....

The rear axle trick works fine but you will also need to make a short pin to go inside the crank and stick outside the end of the crank so the axle hits against it, I use the shank of a drill bit and grind it flat to about 1 1/4" inches if I remember correctly.. It's also handy to have a strap wrench to hold the flywheel while tightening the puller.

Jims the guy for the low speed coils, these old coils fail quite often.
