My 3 1/2 year old Yuassa 12N554A battery won't hold a charge in spite of being on a Yuassa trickle charger since new.
My choices are another $40 Yuassa, some off brand unit for about $25 or this AGM version for $60

Is it worth buying either the Yuassa or the AGM or do they all just die after a few years?

From an old post of mine on another forum:

I'm currently (get it?) using a CSB brand 1217W AGM battery. It's rated at 4A-h, where the original was 5.5, which just means you are limited to idling with the headlight on for an hour or so instead of an hour and 20 minutes.

I chose this battery because it is readily available and is only around $25 +shpg. It has recessed male push-on terminals, so you need to modify the harness by removing the original battery terminals and putting on the right size female push-on ones. It's a little smaller, so I was able to remove the rubber bumpers in the battery box at the sides and bottom (not ends) and add about 1/2" of foam rubber in their place.

AGM batteries are damaged by overcharging, since they don't have any electrolyte to spare, and you can't replace replace it once it's lost, so check your charging voltage and compare it to the charging information that's usually printed on the battery.

A Werker brand version of the same battery is $19.25 plus about $15 shipping here, and it's rated at 5.1 A-h:

Thanks Jim,
While I did change the headlight, turn signals, and a few other items I have been able to keep the stock harnes uncut; suppose I could make a pig tail but the other looks to be bolt in although twice the price of the ones you've found.

Should I only expect a few years life out of any of these batteries or do the AGM go longer?
Mine defineately died from age and not over use or lack of charging.

There's more information on the old site about the subject, but I suspect that 4 years is doing well for any battery. I figure that any mods to the harness are reversible, and a much better option than paying big bucks. The last wet type motorcycle battery I had in my H2 failed because an internal connection came loose. Just wondering, did you check your electrolyte level regularly?

Boy do I feel stupid.
Hadn't checked the level in ages and it is mostly dry :banghead
Thanks for that.

Wonder if it's worth adding acid or just start with a fresh battery?

You don't want to add acid, just distilled water. It's most likely dead......(no pun intended)

John,
If it were nearly dry, wouldn't it take some amount of acid to get the whole process started again?

Stupid old brain; can't remember the obvious; guess I got spoiled by the maintenance free car batteries.

Jim, John's probably sleeping late. :-) Normally, the liquid lost from use is water, leaving more concentrated acid behind, so unless you think you spilled the acid out, it's water that needs to be replaced. When I've let a battery get the acid level below the tops of the plates, the battery is usually about useless, even after refilling. As they say, "Your mileage may vary".
