Hey gang, I want to start kicking this thing over. It's been completely gone thru so it will be a brand new engine. What do I need to do first? I thought it would be smart to run pre-mix in it until I get the oil lines bled. What ratio? Also, what checks should I go thru to make sure it will all work? 12v at the coils? What else?

Make sure the kill switch works, and the throttle cable is free. It's good to have oil in the transmision. Did you pull the oil tank nipple and check for junk plugging the filter screen?

You will get a few opinions on premix, I don't use it, to much oil can prevent the rings from seating. Kawasaki didn't even fill the oil lines. Just start and hold the pump cam wide open and watch the oil pulse through the lines. will take a minute or so. There is no load on the motor in neutral, plenty of assembly lube on the crank and bores for the time it takes for the pump to bleed.

That is pretty vague...
If you haven't already done so, clean the oil tank filter.
Bleed the oil line to the pump.
If you have honed the cyls, best to run dino oil, if not, then your oil of choice.
When the engine starts up, at idle, hold the oil pump manually wide open until you see oil flowing in all lines to the check valves. It should take about 2-3 minutes. Using this method there is no need to premix.
If it makes you feel better to premix use 100:1 with a gallon of gas.
Put the petcock to "prime" and give the carb bowls time to fill prior to kicking it over.
Kick it over and start it.
If it won't start, then you may need to look at ignition, etc.

PS: If you have a '74 H1 and have 12v at the coils then you DO have a problem.

Great idea on the kill switch. I had not thought about that. How do you test it?

Ok on the pump screen and I will forego the premix. I will run the dino oil since it is a fresh cylinder. I'm with you on the 12V to the coil. Is there another check I can make to sure I hooked up everything correctly? I guess I should check to see if there is a spark when I kick it over?

Forgive my ignorance this is my first total rebuild and my first two-stroke.

And yeah, I am not a praying man but I'll make an exception in this case Mark!

Kick it over with the spark plugs out and iggy on, then hit the kill switch. It might spark once but not after that.

When you kick it over you'll find out if you have spark.... it will fire & run, if not, THEN you can start trying to find out why. It's not like you're launching a satellite, relax and just make sure oil is flowing after it starts up.

LOL. I have visions of this thing ending up as a twisted block of aluminum, steel and rubber... and catching my garage on fire. Several thousand $$ and a 1 1/2 years of my time.
