I have used aerosol clear coat before and was not happy.
I believe you are referring to SprayMax 2K? That seems like a good bet.Anybody else have an opinion to share here?

What do you guys do after polishing aluminum? Wax it, Polish it, or leave it bare? Seems like a lot of work to do this more than once but I would like to know what others are doing. |

I've tried Semi-chrome followed by paste wax Not so sure the wax ever did any good Did not have good luck with aerosol clear coats but have not tried the Y2K epoxies yet |

If I coated it then what would my kids do ?  They like to help dad clean the old boy up. Personally I don't mind keeping stuff shiny.....I have more fear of using something that will go wrong altogether coatingwise than I do of hating to clean once in a while.

The factory used good clear coating all those years ago, and they worked. Their formulation was called "Melamine Clear", was special, and was also sold under the "Lubri-Tech" name banner of paints. It was made to NOT yellow after application and/or age, and, for the most part, it worked well. Almost all of the clear coats I have used of late, and I am now painting my mountain bike, don't work well. The coatings I have had not so great, yellowing are Ace, and Krylon. I didn't like Dupli-Color some years ago, was worse than any paint I have used then, but, I have to say, this bike is being painted with rattle can, and with Dupli-Color factory bright red and bright white, both paint extremely well for rattle can colored goo, even in cold (I painted the frame white yesterday, Sunday, in 60 degree shop temp, very impressed with the paint so far). I haven't got to the clear coat yet. That will be in a week or so, when I get the decals in place, after I am fully sure the base colors are fully dry, and I can make a fire in my wood stove, to heat the shop. What I have found with it is, this stuff likes to be misted on, and on one front fork, I goofed, made a small run, and, even in the cold, it cleared itself up, amazing, because paint and body work just ain't my strong suit. It also really likes air application temps above 70 deg/F, too. I will try to get a piece of aluminum engine cover polished up, and clear coat it with the Dupli-Color when I do the clear on the bicycle parts, and post the results after that. |

I didn't have any luck with this on bodywork, I think I was spraying it too thick. Seems to be pretty darn tough, and good to 350 F http://www.kbs-coatings.com/diamondfini ... rcoat.html |

its difficult to replicate a 'factory finish' on polished aluminium, a coat of lacquer usually ends up with a worm effect under the lacquer I leave 'em bare and a quick polish every so often keeps 'em looking good

I appreciate the input from you guys. I am pretty dangerous with paint so I will probably leave them bare. This will not be an everyday bike so I can live with some TLC time now and then. |

I think the worst parts to just leave bare polished would be the hubs. It would take a lot of work to keep them looking good on a ridden bike. |

I used Eastwood's Diamond Satin Clear on my fork lowers. It went on nicely and looks "factory", but only time will tell how it holds up. Terry |
