Unfortunately, if the plating is gone and you polished the steel, it'll need a clear coating of some sort to prevent rust.

You shouldn't try to upload a photo to the board if it's larger than about 1024x768. Any bigger and it just make readers have to scroll sidways to try to see it. Just shrink the photo to a reasonable size, like 800x600 before you upload it. Phones make huge photos these days.

So it must be a good coat of chrome plating I working on.

They all shine like chrome.

I have a protective polish I use on my car that works well on metal.

If you have an original Kaw triple part with good chrome, it's a first. :lol:

Been giving this some thought as I finish up polishing the gear change lever.

When I did one of the small brackets in the linkage, a small bump was sanded down and you could see bare steel underneath.

These items would appear to me to Chrome Plated Steel.

The plating is thick and hard as I have been using 600 grit Aluminum Oxide paper with no problems.

Whatever they are made from has turned out very shiny and with "new like" appearance.

My method on a polishing machine was:

1. Strip with fine wire wheel to get the paint and rough spots off.
2. Soak in Evapo-Rust 24 hrs any rusted connectors or washers.
3. Sand with 600 grit on 2" pad (drill bit size) until all imperfections removed
4. Final sand with used 600 grit paper on the 2" pad
5. Buff with 3" Sisal wheel and Rouge Compound
6. Final Buff with 4" Stitched Cotton wheel and Blue Compound
7. Seal with Wolfgang MetallWerk Concours Metal Sealant
8. Maintain with Multi-Surface Finish Restorer

PS. The last 2 items are personal choices - any metal sealant and polish will work

Took a good look in the sun(has not been out in 10 days) and the shifter is pitted in spots down to the steel.

I can polish it up but it turns black in a matter of days.

Re-chrome is about $125.00 so might just polish up and seal with clear coat.

See how that looks and go from there.

WOW! $125! I struggle with prices in the U.S. You've done half the work already by polishing it as best as you can, in the U.K. a start to finish re-chrome may be $60 :think:

struggle with prices? $7-$8 for a gallon of fuel in the U.K.?

We have to keep in mind that here in the States, chroming uses a lot of toxic chemicals and metals that our EPA doesn't like much, and maintaining, working with them is looked at very closely by those air monitors. So, figure pricing is higher when government people get involved in the process, and micro-manage the processes and raw materials used.
