Have read here that phosphoric acid works well on cleaning cyliders and surmise that muratic would do the same.
The can of Evapo Rust says it will clean rust off carbs and shows a picture of an automotive aluminum carburetor.

My H2 rear hub looks awful but don't want to tear the wheel apart. I'm assuming any of the acids will probably harm the chrome and not sure what acid or evapo would do to a tire.

If it were you:
A. Clean hub with Phosphorc acid and try to keep it off the rim and tire
B. Clean hub with either Muraitic or Phosphoric as it is just jive cast aluminum
C. Use evaporust, not worry about the rim but do keep it off the tire
D. Just pressure wash it without spraying water into the wheel bearings
E. Leave it alone as it won't get much better and you'll just screw something up in the process

i am no help to you but love the multipul choice? :D
i am in the same possition and i was going to use an air tool and rag stuck on a wire brush with a bunch of polish.

To get em nice, they have to be disassembled. I would leave it untill you decide to respoke.

But it looks soo ratty and covered with old aluminum jizz, oxidation, & funk material.
Wahhhhh; Somebody has got to have an easy clean up for this; we put a man on the moon 41 years ago and triples riders have to settle for spoogey hubs?

Evaporust shouldnt harm anything Jim.
Maybe a 1" buffing wheel with a hand dril and like mentioned above, a bunch of polish?

Don't be a weenie. Remove wheel from bike, clean wheel with paint stripper. Then when dry use a HF soda blaster. Re-install wheel. Done. :mrgreen:

I haven't used it myself but I hear that it does work and the soda isn't too aggresive on chosen parts

Good luck, as John already said the only way is to disassemble the hub, but this may be a temporary solutiuon :thumbup:

I've had decent results with the following half-assed method which can be done without taking the wheel apart (must be removed though):

Spray the hub very liberally with Aluma Brite http://www.auroramarine.com/aurora/cata ... html?cat=1
Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and power wash. Then stuff a small hand towel through the spokes and push it down into the groves and chase it around the drum a few times with a long screw driver. Finally, spray the hub with Alumetron which dries to provide a coating which keeps away oxidation and chain grease. Voila. :thumbup:

This stuff is for aluminum boats..works great!

I use petrol in an atomiser and a 1" brush.It works well.
