After fitting a Jim Hobbs low speed coil I took the bike for a test ride and found it went well in lower gears revving through the range but when cruising in top gear about 80 mph there is a strong miss and I think it is probably a spark plug coil breaking down, is there a definitive test to prove these coils and if not should I buy secondhand ebay stock coils or is there a known good performing replacement new coil that this forum knows about,as if I can't test them I will just replace them Cheers Hooter,

I just bought three repro coils for a hundred bucks from z1 parts.net.

Right, the black reproduction coils work well, and are a bolt-on, plug-in replacement. Jess can get them, as can several other suppliers, so buy them from your favorite one.

Old wires, a bad ground somewhere, or a failing CDI unit can cause the same symptoms. Also, depending on the state of tuning of your engine, and your sprockets, that RPM might put you right in the "flat spot". If it's doing that and you go down to 4th, does it quit missing?

Can you test a coil accurately with just an ohm meter and no load?

No, only partially, since it might arc internally with voltage applied, or have a heat related short or open.

Actually Jim it seems worse the lower the revs and probably worse under the most load as in top gear,I am buying a new set of coils from Jess anyway as they are old, hooter.
