Finished up my "built from pieces" RD400 today. Started with the tail & a RD bottom end. Swap meets & ebay for everything else

Image

It's a RD400E, with RZ350 wheels, forks, front brakes, & tripleclamps.

Image

AirTech KR250 tail, with a LED bar light & license plate notch put in it.

The RD tank has a huge tunnel in the rear portion of the tank, used that cavern to make a glove box. It's held closed with magnets.

The pipes are Moto Carrera. I cut the sweeping long stinger off of them, and put an equally long stinger into the middle of the pipe. Made a silencer for the already quite pipes.

I wire brushed the paint off the pipes to shiny, applied some gun blue then Mop & Glow.

The foot controls are from a Hayabusa, with a little trimming. They are rubber isolated.

Put a Radian swingarm on, made a hanger for the GSX dual puck rear caliper.

I de-tabbed the center portion of the frame, made a cradle to hold the Sea-Do oil tank (with level indicator!), and mouted all the electrics out of sight under the seat.

The DG heads are originals, not the repo's. I had to make some sleeves to fit the 28 flatslides in the RZ intake adaptors, & drill the carbs for the oil lines. Got a Chinese boost bottle. The reeds are TDR's, with a spacer in the "bottom end" location. The RZ Y tube filter had to be shortened to fit because I mounted the ignition switch under the tank, didn't think about that when the frame was empty..

Yamaha had the RD figured out by the time this bike was made! Starts with half a kick with the DynaTech ignition, handles solid/stable great, goes as fast as quick as I will ever need, and stops straight right now.. The S2 will now only be out for special occasion. It's almost as agile as my real canyon ride.

She turned out great! I didn't know you were building a RD, I make a rear tank "hole" cover for them. When using a cafe seat......
